The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the field of journalism andpush them to become journalists for a semester. Students will be put in therole of a journalist and will encounter the real-life scenarios thatjournalists face. They’ll have to think critically to determine what events arereally worth covering. They’ll evaluate pages of notes to determine whatinformation is the most significant. They’ll conduct interviews. They’ll writenews stories and features. They’ll participate in newsroom debates. They’lltake part in a mock trial involving a famous First Amendment court case. They’llresearch a career in journalism and map out the path to get there, culminatingin an interview with the teacher. They’ll learn the basics of Adobe InDesignand design a magazine spread. They’ll be challenged to take the skills theylearn in class and apply them in covering actual events at AHS.
