Volunteer Opportunities at East:

Media Center Support:  Volunteers are needed to support efforts of the media center including shelving, preparation of materials, book fairs held 2-3 times per year, and the reading program.

Box Tops for Education:  Here is the volunteer opportunity that can be done from home.  Throughout the General Mills’ Box Tops for Education coupons are collected.  People are needed to prepare these coupons for cash redemption by bundling them in groups and filling out the collection sheet.  Coupons will be sent home with your student as necessary.

Gray Brothers Pie Distribution:  Support is needed to help with this long-time annual tradition.  Preparation of the collection envelopes as well as help upon delivery and the night of distribution on Monday, November 25.

Beginning of the Year:  Help is needed during the Oriole Open House on Monday, July 28, in the form of manning a station.  These are in spirit wear, 6th grade performing arts shirts, registration packets, sign-ups for volunteers, and locker help.  We could also use some help preparing teacher information materials before the start of the year.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation:  Volunteers are needed throughout the year to recognize various employee groups including office staff, custodial staff, food service, instructional assistants, and teachers.  Traditionally this has been in the form of report card luncheons, monthly staff birthdays and half-birthdays (those born over the summer months).  This usually involves a donation of a food item on these special occasions.  This is a great way for those who may not be available during the school day to be involved in meeting a school community need.

Enrichment:  This is a tentative opportunity and will largely be determined by the number of interested volunteers.  The staff at East is potentially developing a plan to enrich and extend the learning of all students during the school day.  In order for this to be successful, we need volunteers to lead a club and plan an activity each week in the presence of an AIS East staff member, serve as an extra person to assist an AIS East staff member in leading a club, be willing to sub at the last minute in the case of a volunteer not able to attend, or to take the leadership role and be responsible for communicating with the volunteers.  The time would be for about an hour at the end of the day once per week from January through March.

Speaker’s Bureau:  Are you a history buff?  Are in a science related field such as engineering or biomedical?  Are you willing and able to share any special interests or talents to classes of students?  Some of the big topics at the intermediate level are American history through the American Revolution, the Medieval Period, Renaissance, and modern Europe.  Big science concepts include space, the environment, body systems, and scientific mysteries taught through a crime scene investigation.  The time requirement would probably be a full day when scheduled.

Field Day:  During the last day of school, the physical education department needs human support to organize and implement the field day for students.  It is a one day commitment, and the event is held rain or shine.

Sixth Grade Finale:  On the last school day, there is an opportunity for the sixth graders moving on to the middle school level to spend one last hour of fun together.  We need volunteers to help with serving refreshments, looking for sponsors to support the refreshments, and help supervise.  The time commitment is a few hours planning the event and on the day of the finale.

Our volunteers are a key component in our school's success. Thank you for volunteering your time to help our students and staff!
