Operating Referendum

Our Promises

In 2018, Avon-Washington Township voters approved an Operating Referendum that provided additional funds. Referendums are only good for eight years, so the community had to decide on renewal. On November 4, 2025, the community approved a renewal to allow Avon Schools to maintain supports and services in place since 2018.

Since 2018, district and school administrators have exclusively used referendum funds to fulfill three promises.

1. Lower Class Sizes

Relationships are the foundation for growth and success. Students learn best and achieve more when they have smaller class sizes, more high-quality interactions with teachers and staff, and more direct attention.

2. Competitive Teacher Pay

Students deserve to have the best and brightest teachers. Finding and retaining excellent educators in a competitive market requires competitive salaries and benefits. Avon Schools has made major strides in this area since 2018.

3. More Student Supports

An Avon education is about more than grades and test scores. We added much-needed personnel, clubs, and experiences to support student well-being, mental wellness, and the whole child, making for a fuller educational experience.

Top 10% ILEARN Scores

graph showing Avon's state ranking

Since 2018, when the percentage of students passing both English-Language Arts and Math on Indiana standardized tests fell to its lowest point — and the community passed the referendum — test scores have rebounded. Avon Schools is now consistently ranked in the top 10% of Indiana's 292 public school corporations.

Helping Diverse Learners Succeed

chart showing growth in diverse learner populations

We maintain our high academic ranking while providing support to a rapidly growing number of diverse learners and students who receive free/reduced lunch. Of the school corporations that rank higher than Avon Schools, only one has a higher percentage of multilingual students and students receiving free/reduced lunch: Speedway.  (They also have a referendum prioritizing low class sizes.)

'College Ready' Students

avon high school SAT scores

Since 2023, the state has used SAT scores as a measure of academic success, and AHS students have been in the top 10% of Hoosier public high schools. AHS now has the 13th highest percentage of students achieving scores that place them in the 'College Ready' category on both portions of the test.  Across the nation, this standardized test is used for college-bound students but in Indiana all students are required to take it.
