I'm so happy you stopped by. I update this web page most Sunday nights.
This week we will begin our 4th Unit in first grade called Habitats. Students will learn about different habitats in the world and the plants and animals that live in them. They will do a group project on one of the habitats and an individual research report on an animal that lives in that habitat. This unit will last the rest of the school year.
We have included a field trip to the Indianapolis Zoo as part of the unit. We will go to the zoo in May. I will send home more specific information after Spring Break.
The Essential Question for the unit is: How do animals and humans impact nature? This week we will be exploring "How is each habitat unique?"
During this unit we will go back to learning a different set of spelling patterns each week. So, we will have a spelling test each Friday. We will focus on vowel teams and in May on bossy r (ar, ir, ur, or).
PTO will have a Carnival/Silent Auction on April 17. Our class is putting together a Camp Invention/STEM basket for the silent auction. Camp Invention has donated a scholarship to camp (worth $230) for our basket. We are also collecting donations of art or science activities
If you are able to donate to our basket please send your donation to school by March 20. Thank you so much to the Gettinger family for the items they donated.
I posted the first of the four movies the kids made on Schoology. I hope to have the rest edited and and posted by the end of the weekend. To view them, sign in like you did for E-Learning Day, go to "courses" chose "homeroom" then click the pink "Class Movies" folder. You can then click the individual movies to watch. They are around a minute and a half each.
Students came up with a problem and solution, characters, setting, and the steps to the solution. They then chose their characters and wrote their lines together. As they wrote their lines students cut them and we taped them together to make the scripts. I then typed them up so each child could have a legible copy. They then decided on props, brought some from home or made them, location to film and costumes.
They did a great job, especially since we have had so many out sick on different days this week, which effected practice and filming. We even had to have last minute substitues for a couple of the movies. They did a fantastic job filling in at the last minute.
Please remember to send a warm coat, hat and gloves to school. We go outside as long as the windchill is 20 degrees or higher.
Please help your child to remember to return all reading books and folders each morning.
If you send money to school, please put it in an envelope or a ziploc bag with your child's name and the purpose of the money. That way I can help your child get the money to the right place.
If you haven't had a chance to explore the Bridges Math activities and resources there, feel free to do it at any time.
If you need to reach me with any questions or concerns this year please feel free to send a note in your child's folder, call me at 544-6200 or email me firstname.lastname@example.org.
