Mrs. Katie Kozinski

I teach Honors and AP Chemistry at Avon High School. This is my fifth year at the high school.

I am a graduate from Indiana University (B.S. in Biochemistry) and Xavier University (Master's in Secondary Education) with a background in research.

I thoroughly love teaching and love educating my students in all facets of education. In my classroom, my philosophy is that ALL students are capable of achieving excellence. I believe this success does not come without some roadblocks and setbacks, however. I encourage my students to make mistakes and attempt all problems and obstacles even if there is anticipation of failure. I believe without making these mistakes, and evaluating how these mistakes were made/fixed, we cannot grow within ourselves.

Sometimes my students have this idea that success can only be attained if we're smart or talented enough. I have spent a great deal of my educational preparation learning about student success. Success is not related to giftedness, but rather character. Character is who you are and is that of which what you're made. It's the ability to persist through challenges (with grit), the quantity and quality of the work you produce, and the attitude in which you engage in situations (growth mindset). If you are unfamiliar with grit and growth mindset, the following TED Talks have wonderful overviews on their impact in education. I HIGHLY recommend viewing them regardless, very inspiring!

Your students may find a time in my class when they feel frustrated or overwhelmed with the amount of content and complexity of the content. Please note, that I will not give them any task that they are unable to accomplish! I truly believe my grades reflect my students' grit and persistence to succeed in my classroom. I will be posting countless resources for my students on Schoology (the course webpage) as well as office hours for anyone who needs extra support. Those who take advantage of these additional resources WILL succeed in my classroom!

I am a huge advocate for the success of my students! I hope to help your students succeed in all aspects of their educational lives and I am confident that the skills they learn in my classroom will transcend to many different areas of their lives.

Please never hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Thank you!
