A Note About 2026-27 School Fees

Avon Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Wyndham and Chief Financial Officer Sheila Glass have information to share with parents and guardians about school fees for the 2026-27 school year. They also have an invitation to all concerned parents, guardians, and taxpayers to join in advocating for full, fair, and sustainable funding.

Hello, Avon families.

We want to take a few minutes to talk with you about school fees and let you know why most Avon parents and guardians will see an invoice from Avon Schools later in August.

A few years ago, the Indiana General Assembly eliminated textbook rental fees and required schools to provide curricular materials at no cost to families. While this change was welcome news for parents, it also shifted those expenses to school districts without sufficient funding from the state. For Avon Schools, that has meant the loss of more than $300,000 in annual revenue that previously helped support instructional materials and student learning.

Earlier this year, the Indiana Department of Education clarified the state’s definition of ‘curricular materials,’ allowing schools to charge certain fees for items and experiences that fall outside that definition.

As a school district, we have a responsibility to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars while continuing to provide the high-quality educational experiences our students deserve. We continue working diligently to find efficiencies, control costs, and maximize every available funding source. But as financial pressures continue to grow, we must find ways to offset insufficient state funding to maintain the programs, services, and opportunities that support our mission of helping all students belong, learn, and grow.

That is why Avon Schools will be re-instituting limited fees for the 2026–27 school year. Annual elementary fees range from $12-$14. Middle school families should expect fees in the range of $11-$53 per year. Earlier this summer, we communicated separately with Avon High School families whose students are enrolled in courses that carry higher material or supply costs so they could plan. The average class fee per course at AHS is around $26, and we have identified approximately 200 courses that will require no fees. For all families, invoices will be distributed in August.

We understand that every additional expense matters to families, and we do not make this decision lightly. We will offer payment arrangements to families who require assistance. Our goal is to keep fees as low as possible while protecting the educational experiences that make Avon Schools a source of pride for our community.

We also want to encourage every parent, guardian, and taxpayer to stay engaged in the conversation. We discuss school finance decisions in public budget hearings, and we welcome your participation. Looking ahead, Indiana lawmakers will reconvene early next year to develop the state's next education budget, which will guide school funding for the following two years.
