AHS Earns Sportsmanship Marks from IHSAA

Avon High School ran up the score last year — the sportsmanship score — and officials at the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) have noticed.

"The IHSAA considers scores ranging from 70-89 to be in the 'Needs Improvement' category. Scores from 90-99 are in the 'Acceptable' range. A score of 100+ is considered 'Excellent'," says Avon Athletic Director Jason Young. "We were able to raise our score from 90 for 2022-23 to 130 for 2023-24."

We are proud of our student-athletes, coaches, fans, and community for modeling good sportsmanship between the lines, on the sidelines, and in the stands.

It is nice to see a school focusing on developing character.

Below are some of the write-ups AHS received from officials and school administrators last year. They speak volumes about the strength of our character. Let's keep it up!

Go Orioles!

The athletes and coaches were excellent throughout the 5 hour meet. Smiles and encouraging interaction was exhibited all evening long. The athletes from the boys squad went out of their way to show their appreciation by thanking me for officiating the contest after the conclusion of the meet.

Great job coaches and athletic administration for developing character and good sportsmanship in your athletes that compete in track & field.

Avon has gone out of their way to help Plainfield have a successful IHSAA Baseball Semi-State and have provided us with two extra sets of mobile bleachers to help with the expected high attendance. We have always had a great relationship with Avon, and that has only gotten stronger with Jason Young taking over at the athletic director. We appreciate all their help and cooperation.

The coaches and runners again represented Avon's cross country program by demonstrated leadership, respect, and character. It is nice to see a school focusing on developing character, at least in its sports program.

Awesome job from the athletic director, to the coaches, and finally to the athletes on the cross country teams.

The Avon HS boys freshman football coaching staff was very professional on what was a challenging day between injuries and trailing the entire game. Their parents were relentless with criticism of both the coaching staff and officials, but the Avon staff kept its poise and helped their players keep theirs as well. When a coaching member disagreed with a call, he asked for clarification, received it and moved on. Very good sideline.

Anyone who associated with Avon would have been proud of the way [Girls Basketball Coach Will Staal] behaved and coached his team. Avon Girls Varsity team was professional, courteous, played hard, and listened to the coaching staff. The Girls Varsity team is a reflection of their leadership from Coach Staal.

The Sectional at Avon was first class! The administration communicated very well to the teams and officials, there was excellent hospitality and good security presence, and the teams participated with class and sportsmanship. The Avon coaches and administration put on a great tournament and should be commended for their efforts. Thank you and I look forward to working at Avon for future sporting events.

After the Regional game here at Greenfield Central that featured Avon and Lawrence North the gym was a mess. We had arranged for our Athletic Leadership Council student-athletes to be here to help with clean up. As they were cleaning the bleachers, there was a single student from Avon who began helping. He helped our ALC kids clean the entire east side of the bleachers - trash, signage, etc. I feel it is important to recognize when students step up in these types of situations. In this instance I feel that his willingness to help stems from the culture that Avon High School is building within their student body. Thanks to Jason and Lance for their leadership within their Athletic Department and school.

Wanted to cite two more catchers from my varsity game on Saturday at Avon High School. Carson Foxen & DJ Clymore were outstanding behind the plate. Again, I did not get hit the entire game. Carson moved extremely well & blocked many wild pitches. He worked his tail off. DJ is ONLY a frosh, and he also did not allow me to get hit by any pitched ball. His job was easier as his pitchers were consistently around the zone, but for a freshman, his performance was incredible. It goes without saying that both of these young men were awesome to talk to. Carson has always been very outgoing & a good conversationalist. DJ is still learning that aspect of his job, but he was still good. Kudos to both of these young men for their performance!
