AHS Media Students Win 7 National Awards

Avon High School Media students — students who participate in Broadcasting, Yearbook, and Newspaper courses and activities — traveled to Seattle to participate in this year's Journalism Education Association's National High School Journalism Convention.

They flew back to Avon with arms full of national awards.

According to Broadcast Teacher Lauren Tauer, there were nearly 900 students at the convention from across the nation. Eight AHS students won a total of seven national awards:

Broadcast

  • Broadcast Package: Eva Pearson and Rion Bolden, Honorable Mention 
  • Broadcast news writing: Jacob Vereb, Superior (top score, 1st in category) 
  • Video editing: Kyle Brownfield, Honorable Mention 

Yearbook

  • Graphic Design Advertising: Lilian Wible, Superior (top score, 1st in category) 
  • Sports Writing: Fred Wittman, Honorable Mention

Newspaper

  • Print News writing: Salem Araya, Excellent 
  • Print Feature writing: Simone Bender, Honorable Mention

"We won seven national journalism awards and two students were the highest scorers in their categories," says Tauer. "We won more national awards than any other Indiana high school. I'm so proud of our media students!"
