This AMS South Educator is a Lifesaver

At the May 12 meeting of the Board of School Trustees, Avon Middle School South teacher Garrett Blackmore was recognized by the Board as well as our friends at the Avon-Washington Township Fire Department for saving a student's life. During class, a student inhaled a water bottle cap. He demonstrated bravery and quick thinking by administering the Heimlich maneuver.

In a letter to Mr. Blackmore, the Board of School Trustees wrote, "Thank you once again for being there when it mattered most. We are beyond grateful for your quick response and your unwavering commitment to your students' safety and health."

As part of maintaining their teaching licences, all educators must keep their first aid training up to date. What might seem like just another box that must be checked off their lists — many might think When am I ever going to need this? — can end up being the difference between tragedy and safety.

We appreciate you, Mr. Blackmore.
