Building Trades Students at the OLC
by Jeremy Maxwell, Outdoor Learning Center Coordinator
Avon High School Construction Trades students have been busy out at the OLC for the past couple of weeks.
As you may know, the OLC received a grant that allowed us to start redoing some of the trail surfaces to make them more stable and allow students with mobility limitations, such as wheelchairs, access to the OLC. For the last two weeks, students in Israel Blevins’s class have been coming out to the OLC to learn the process of laying a new trail surface. Matt Gessner from Milestone Contractors also came out to guide students in this work. He has volunteered many hours at the OLC over the years, and he was an excellent resource for these students.
The students put in a lot of hard work, and the trail looks great. It will open a path to the amphitheater for wheelchair use and allow even more students access to the OLC. I think this project was a wonderful partnership between the OLC and AHS, and I’m looking forward to having more learning opportunities with the construction trades program in the future!
