Hickory Assistant Saves a Life

Hickory Assistant Saves a Life

Hickory Elementary School Special Education Assistant Sandra Bell sprung to action when a student began choking. It wasn't as simple as patting the child on the back and encouraging them to cough. This was a real emergency that required her to put her first aid training to work, administering the Heimlich maneuver for a few minutes to successfully dislodge the food item.

In her mind, she was just doing her job, but Sandra's quick thinking and decisive action saved the student's life.

At the December meeting, the Avon Board of School Trustees honored her. Special guests Avon Fire Department Chief Danny Brock and Division Chief of EMAS Stephanie Winegar were in attendance to recognize Sandra's efforts and to present her with a commendation.

Thank you, Sandra, for your compassionate heart and quick actions.
