Indiana Mobile Device Law - Educators' Perspectives

On July 1, Indiana Senate Bill 185 went into effect. This Bill required all Indiana school corporations and charter schools to adopt and implement wireless communication device policies to govern student use of devices. We asked Avon High School educators and students for their opinions about the new policies.

Students' Perspective

Avon High School Assistant Principal Jim Graham administered a survey and 67 AHS educators responded. In addition to sharing a report of their responses to two questions (see charts), he summarized the key themes from educators' comments.

  1. Increased Student Engagement and Focus: Teachers frequently mention that students are more engaged in learning and less distracted by their phones. This includes increased focus during class and a notable improvement in academic productivity.
  2. Improved Student Socialization: There’s a clear trend of increased student interaction and communication. Teachers are observing more face-to-face conversations, collaboration on schoolwork, and general social interaction.
  3. Enhanced Classroom Environment and Culture: Many teachers note a positive shift in the classroom environment and school culture. This includes fewer distractions, better behavior, and an overall improved atmosphere.
  4. Easier Classroom Management: The new policy has made it easier for teachers to manage their classrooms, with fewer instances of reminding students to put away phones. Consistency across the school has also contributed to this ease.
  5. Reduction in Missing Assignments: The number of missing assignments has decreased noticeably, as students are more likely to use their time productively instead of being distracted by their phones.
  6. Positive Impact on Mental Health: Some feedback highlights improvements in students' mental well-being, with fewer students feeling the anxiety and distraction associated with phone use.
  7. Challenges with Smart Watches and Laptops: While phones are less of an issue, some teachers are encountering new challenges with the misuse of smartwatches and laptops. 
  8. Long-Term Optimism: Several teachers express optimism that the policy's benefits will become even more pronounced as the year progresses.

The new cell phone policy has increased student engagement and focus in the classroom, with many teachers noting improvements in academic productivity and a more positive classroom environment. Students interact more with each other and use their time more effectively, resulting in fewer missing assignments. While classroom management has become more manageable, and the policy appears beneficial for student mental health, some challenges with smartwatches and laptops persist. Overall, the feedback is optimistic, with many anticipating even more significant benefits as the year progresses.
