Junior Day of Caring Impacts Avon & Beyond

On Thursday, September 10, nearly 900 Avon High School juniors spent the day serving the Town of Avon and surrounding communities during the annual Junior Day of Caring.

"The benefit [of Junior Day of Caring] — not just for us but for the community — is really huge," said Mayowa Adetoye, AHS junior in a podcast episode with Dr. Wyndham, recorded the day after the event. "It teaches us selflessness and it also shows the community that the next generation is [made up of] good people."

Students and chaperones descended on nearly 40 sites around the community. While onsite, they participated in a wide variety of serving activities: spending time with students, spreading mulch, organizing storage spaces, shelving books, landscaping, teaching lessons, and much more.

The obvious benefit, for the organizations, is the completion of labor-intensive projects. For the students, not only do they get to have fun with friends and the satisfaction of a job well done, they learn more about vital community organizations, hear from influential leaders, form relationships, and grow deeper roots in their community.

AHS junior Jade Price says, "Even if students are involved in a lot of clubs [at school], many of them don't do a lot community outreach. I think it's extremely beneficial. I'm getting to hear about these different organizations that definitely needed our help. It's such an insignificant thing for us to give up one day but it made a big impact on the organizations we served."
