Language Learning Can Take You Places

Language Learning Can Take You Places

While we watched the World Cup on television, one Avon educator got to be in the middle of the action. Her firsthand report shows the value of learning languages and growing in cultural awareness. She was kind enough to share her perspective. It follows, edited lightly for this format.

Language learning extends far beyond the classroom. Susi Clark

By Susi Clark, Avon Middle School North Spanish Teacher

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the FIFA World Cup in Miami as a volunteer in the hospitality zones at Hard Rock Stadium. In this role, I welcomed and assisted guests from around the world, using my Spanish, English, and German language skills to help create a warm and inclusive experience for international visitors.

The hospitality positions were highly sought after, and my multilingual abilities helped me earn the opportunity to serve in this unique role. My ability to communicate across cultures demonstrated the powerful impact that language learning can have in creating connections and making people feel welcome, no matter where they come from.

While volunteering, I was able to catch glimpses of the matches and experience the energy and excitement surrounding one of the world’s largest sporting events. What stood out most was the way soccer brought together people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. Although the event took place in Miami, the atmosphere felt truly global, with fans and visitors united by their shared love of the sport.

As a teacher, I believe that language learning extends far beyond the classroom. I has a deep passion for service, cultural exchange, educational travel, and helping others connect through communication. This experience reinforced my belief that knowing another language is not just about speaking different words, it is about building relationships, fostering understanding, and opening doors to the world.

For me, volunteering at the FIFA World Cup brought together many of my passions: serving others, meeting people from around the globe, and sharing meaningful experiences across cultures. The opportunity was a reminder of the importance of global awareness and the lifelong connections that can be created through language.
