Mary Lee Maier Community Pantry Serves a Crowd
In the year ending on June 30, 2024, the Mary Lee Maier Community Pantry served enough individuals from Avon and Washington Township to fill every seat in Gainbridge Fieldhouse and still leave 5,000 people in standing-room-only areas.
Let that sink in.
The pantry's vision is to end hunger in Avon and Washington Township. They are striving to make sure that no Avon student ever needs to come to school hungry, and they are making a huge difference. They opened for business in 2018. At that time, they were serving approximately 37 hungry families each week. In the last year, that number passed 100. They served an average of 104 families each week last school year and last month, that average jumped to 117. A record number of families received groceries on August 22 when 139 families showed up.
When you consider the fact that each family that visits the pantry leaves with the equivalent of $100 worth of groceries each week, you can begin to imagine the scale of the pantry's work.
The need continues to grow in our community, and the incredible people at the Mary Lee Maier Community Pantry continue to step up. But they need our help. Could you volunteer to stock shelves and interact with shoppers? Could you make a one-time or recurring donation?
If you can support this incredible work, please do. It's an opportunity to love our neighbors — even those we may never meet — and to demonstrate that we are #AvonProud.
