Media Students Travel to Boston, Bring Back Awards

Twenty-two Avon High School Media students — members of the yearbook, newspaper, and broadcasting teams — traveled to Boston to compete with students from across the nation at the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association National High School Journalism Convention and they were rewarded for their efforts.

Five students won awards:

  • Cameron Thompson — Yearbook Copy/Captions, Excellent
  • Simone Bender — Feature Writing, Honorable Mention
  • Amy Arriaga, Jaidyn Bills, Eva Pearson — Online News Package, Honorable Mention

"To bring home any recognition is huge," says AHS Broadcasting Teacher Lauren Tauer, who noted that more than 4,100 students from across the nation attended the convention and 1,600 students participated in competitions.

Tauer related two fun stories about the trip.

When students arrived at Indianapolis International to depart for the trip, they were greeted by members of the Avon Education Foundation. They awarded the students with a grant that enabled them to participate in a tour of the campus of Harvard University during their trip.

Also, one journalism student, Sadie Whittkamper, had a close connection to the flights to and from Boston's Logan International. Her mother piloted the aircraft to Boston and her father was the pilot of the return trip.

It's encouraging to know that our parents and community partners are supporting our students in such hands-on ways.

Congratulations, students, for a successful trip and for these great achievements!
