Meet South's Soap Box Derby Champion
by Jaidyn Bills
Avon Middle School South student, Shelton Taylor, earned first place in the All-American Soap Box Derby this summer in Akron, Ohio.
This is a major accomplishment. His performance on-track are impressive enough, but he is also paving a new path. Shelton is the first African-American to win the local challenge in his division. He placed top three in the nation out of 500 cars and the top two in the nation out of 50 states. He describes it as “pretty much a big deal”.
"I am proud of what Shelton has been able to accomplish in his four years of racing," says his Mom, La Tonya Brown. "He has had some losses that has pushed him to strive to race better and his hard work and determination have led to historic milestones."
Shelton is an inspiration. He's paving the way for other would-be racers, demonstrating sportsmanship, and displaying a great attitude.
Brown says, "It's been inspiring to watch him push himself to new heights while showing good sportsmanship. As a parent, I’m thrilled to see him reach his goals. Our next stop is next week as we head to Nationals in South Charleston, West Virginia."
Good luck, Shelton!
