The New School Year By the Numbers

We are one full week into the 2026-27 school year. It's been a great start! Let's look at a snapshot of the numbers that make up a new school year.

At the start of the school year, we have:

• 10,830 students in preschool through grade 12 at 1 high school, 3 middle schools (North, South, West), 8 elementary schools (Cedar, Evergreen, Hickory, Maple, Pine Tree, River Birch, Sycamore, Willow), 1 early learning center, 1 academy, and 1 online school.
• 1,890 total employees (including our Teacher & Support Staff of the Year) who are serving in our schools, in our offices, on our sidelines, and in a pinch (thanks to our 164 substitute teachers).
• 155 Transportation employees who log 5,700 miles per day in the process of completing 628 individual runs to safely deliver 9,427 students to and from 20 locations.
• 104 Food Service employees who cleaned and prepared 14 kitchen/cafeterias until they shined and who have already served 31,001 school breakfasts and lunches to hungry students.
• 92 Facilities/Grounds/Maintenance team members who worked together to get 2.4 million square feet of buildings and 780 acres of grounds in tip-top shape when the school bell rang on the first day.
• 49 Administration Center staff members who have enrolled 1,330 new students — including 642 kindergarten students —while making sure sure the district's finances, curriculum, and payroll were ready for the start of the year.
• 22 Technology employees who distributed 1,800 student devices, updated and maintained tech in hundreds of classrooms, completed 15 state and federal reports, updated information in 130 learning and operational apps, and managed to relocate their offices and the Network Operation Center (Data Center) over the summer with minimal downtime.
• 6 Human Resources team members who have hired and oriented 70 new certified staff/educators and 80 new support staff for the new school year.

That's just a snapshot of Avon Schools here at the start of the school year. Although there are a lot of numbers in this article, remember: there's only one number that really matters.
