A 2026 analysis from Ball State University cuts through that confusion by asking a more meaningful question: How much do schools actually contribute to student success, given the challenges their students face?

The answer places Avon Schools firmly among Indiana’s top-performing districts.

Traditional rankings often reflect factors outside a school’s control. Across Indiana, student poverty alone explains 35% to 40% of differences in test scores. When combined with demographics and funding variables, those factors explain up to 53% of performance variation.

That means nearly half of what you see in raw scores has more to do with a student’s background than the effectiveness of their school.

To address this, researchers use a “value added” model. This approach compares actual performance to what would be expected based on student characteristics such as income, demographics, and English language proficiency. The difference — the “value added” — represents what schools themselves are contributing.

In essence, it reveals which districts are truly helping students succeed beyond expectations.

Avon Goes Above and Beyond Expectations

By this measure, Avon stands out.

In 8th-grade English Language Arts and Math, Avon students achieved an actual proficiency rate of 53.7%, despite a predicted rate of 27.1% based on student demographics. That’s a +26.6 percentage point gain, placing Avon in the top 20% of all Indiana school districts.

This is a significant margin. Statewide, even the highest-performing districts typically exceed expectations by smaller amounts, and large swings of 20–30 percentage points are considered exceptional. 

Similar results appear at earlier grade levels. In 3rd grade, Avon again ranks in the top performance tier, demonstrating that student growth begins early and continues through middle school.

Avon is among the top 10 districts in Indiana for value added performance, alongside a mix of both rural and suburban districts. This matters because it shows Avon’s success is not simply a function of size or advantage. It reflects consistent instructional strength, excellent leadership, and consistent community support.

What "Value-Added" Success Really Means

So, what does it mean when a district like Avon outperforms expectations?

It means students are learning more than predicted, year after year. Researchers attribute this “added value” to factors within a district’s control, including:

• Effective teaching strategies
• Strong school leadership

While the study does not measure each of these individually, it concludes that 47% to 59% of student outcomes are driven by school level factors — the very elements local educators and communities influence.

It also shows that high performance is not fixed. The study finds only modest year to year persistence, meaning schools can improve. This means strong performance reflects continual effort, not just past conditions.
