Preparing for Success: Understanding the ILEARN Checkpoints Pilot

Preparing for Success: Understanding the ILEARN Checkpoints Pilot

This year, our district is participating in an exciting new pilot program for the ILEARN Checkpoints, an initiative by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) designed to help students from Grades 3 to 8 in assessing their progress in key skills and concepts in English/Language Arts (ELA) and Math. Over 70% of Indiana schools are piloting the new assessments this year.

What are ILEARN Checkpoints?

ILEARN Checkpoints are short assessments that will be given three times during the school year: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Each checkpoint contains 20-25 questions designed to measure students' understanding of critical skills and concepts as outlined in the Indiana Academic Standards. These checkpoints provide teachers with valuable information to guide instruction and support each student's learning journey.

Key Details About the ILEARN Checkpoints:

  • Subject: Checkpoint for ELA and Checkpoint for math.
  • Grade Levels: The ILEARN Checkpoints are being piloted for students in Grades 3 through 8.
  • Test Length: Each checkpoint includes 20-25 questions. Estimate to take 30-45 minutes per checkpoint.
  • Testing Windows: The first testing window opens on September 16. Additional testing windows are scheduled for December and January.

These checkpoints are an essential component of the new ILEARN through-year assessment that will be fully implemented across Indiana in the 2025-26 school year. By participating in this pilot, our district is at the forefront of adopting this innovative approach to assessing student learning and supporting academic growth.

We encourage all families to support their children through this process and to reach out to their child's teacher or the school with any questions or concerns about the ILEARN Checkpoints. We will share results from the Checkpoints with families when they become available. Together, we can make this pilot a success and enhance our educational practices for the benefit of all students.
