Speech & Debate Sends 11 Students to Nationals

by Linda Langford

On Saturday, March 1, the Avon High School Speech and Debate team qualified 11 competitors for the national tournament in June. To qualify, a student must finish in the top two of their event.

Below are the qualifiers and their events:

  • Congress – Janani Devendran
  • Dramatic Interpretation – Cassidy Herrmann
  • Duo Interpretation – Salem Araya & Will Hicks
  • Humorous Interpretation – Noah Johnson & Sam Johnson
  • Informative Speaking – Precious Olaniyan
  • International Extemp – Santiago Jimenez & Jay Desai
  • Program Oral Interpretation – Doyin Akande & Nancy Orogun

Additionally, our team won the District Team Sweepstakes, meaning that between speech and debate, we earned the most sweepstakes points in the district. We were also honored with the Leading Chapter Award, a national recognition from the National Speech and Debate Association.

State finals will be held on March 8 at Fishers.

Thank you for your continued support this season!
