Students Stand Out at Journalism Convention

Students Stand Out at Journalism Convention

by Lauren Tauer

Avon High School students traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, to participate in the Fall National High School Journalism Convention, hosted by the Journalism Education Association. Two students earned prestigious awards.

Lauren Klein, a junior, earned an 'Excellent' ranking in Broadcast News Writing. This was the highest award given in this category.

Senior Frederick Wittman also earned an 'Excellent' score in Yearbook Copy/Caption: Sports. He stood out in a highly competitive category.

One category, Broadcasting Convention Recap Video, will be announced in later.

This was their biggest JEA convention since 2019, with 1,669 students competing. Only 194 excellent awards were given, and two of them went to our students. Many students don’t get any recognition in their category at all, and any ranking is notable. Most of the students we brought to Nashville were first-time participants who are training for next year’s competition.

We are super proud of these students. This was a tough competition this year and they stood out!
