The Library Minute with Audrey

In Avon Schools, our libraries are hubs of activity. They are centers of learning, imagination, and excitement. In each issue of Oriole Blast, we'll feature a select book review by an Avon student. In addition to enjoying the chance to hear from them, maybe they'll get you hooked on a book.

My name is Audrey. I am a freshman at Avon High School.

Seafire, by Natalie C. Parker, is the first novel in a fascinating fantasy trilogy. The main character, Caledonia Styx, takes up the role of pirate captain when her family is killed by Bullets, the bloodthirsty soldiers of Aric Athair. Aric controls Silt, a drug that turns human blood orange and makes a person more beast than man. Aric distributes Silt among his soldiers and requires its consumption, ensuring his soldiers’ brutality and dependence upon him. In this fast-paced novel, Caledonia struggles between being a good captain and a good friend, as Aric struggles to eliminate her pirate ship and maintain control of the seas.

This book excites from beginning to end with relatable characters that draw the reader in. My favorite character is Oran, a Bullet who boards Caledonia’s ship insisting he wants to withdraw from Silt and become part of her crew. Are his intentions good or will he betray her when she least expects it? Read the book to find out!

If your child is inspired to check out this recommendation, they may get it from their school library, by visiting our friends at the Avon-Washington Township Public Library or pick up a copy online.
