Student Laptop Information for 2024-25

The Strategic Technology Expansion Plan and Upgrades Program (STEP-UP) will prepare Avon students for a technology-rich future while expanding learning outside the traditional classroom. In this 1:1 web environment students will collaboratively create content, explore and expand their learning with access to web-based tools and information, and interact with rich curricular content created by teachers in our Learning Management System.

Students in Grades 5-10 will use a school-provided device. Laptop insurance is highly recommended.
Students in Grades 11-12 may either use a school-provided device or bring a personal device instead. Chromebooks, tablets, and cell phones are NOT supported devices.

Grades 9-12Students in 9-10th grade at Avon High School are required to use a school provided laptop. Students in 11-12th grade may either use a school provided laptop or choose to bring their own device (BYOD) instead (expand the Laptop BYOD tab below for more info).

Laptop BYOD - Grades 11-12

BYOD = Bring Your Own Device

Avon High School students, in Grades 11-12 only, who do not wish to use a school laptop may choose to bring their own laptop for school use. Windows laptops are preferred. Chromebooks, tablets, and cell phones are NOT supported devices.

Windows PC minimum specifications:

Windows 10 or 11
Must have keyboard (no touch screen only devices)
8 GB RAM
128 GB hard drive
Intel Celeron N4100 or faster processor
Windows 10 S is not supported

MAC minimum specifications:

Apple Macbook Pro or Macbook Air running at least MacOS 11 (Big Sur)
Must have keyboard (no touch screen only devices)
Current version of Windows 10 or 11 installation recommended but not required (Windows 10 Install Assistant)

Requirements:

You must have admin rights to your computer in order to configure access to Avon's wireless network.
You may be required to install Respondus LockDown Browser for secure testing in Schoology. You will receive information from your teacher if this is required in your class.

What NOT to Bring:

ACSC does not support Chromebooks. Each Chromebook is different and may have challenges connecting to our wireless network or accessing school learning resources.
Please do not bring touch screen only phones or tablets such iPad, Kindle, Android tablets, or equivalent as your only device. You must have a laptop with a keyboard to most effectively access learning resources.

Laptop Insurance

Avon Community Schools has chosen Worth Ave. Group as the vendor of choice to insure school-issued laptops. Insurance with Worth Ave. Group will protect the device against: Accidental Damage, Theft, Fire, Flood, Natural Disasters, Power Surge and Vandalism. This insurance policy will provide full replacement cost coverage and will protect the item worldwide (on and off school grounds). The policy is also transferable to a replacement unit. Insurance plans may be purchased online. Please note this insurance does not cover accidental loss of the laptop, and families will be charged the full replacement cost for a lost device.

Coverage Term: Date of purchase - July 18, 2025
- It is up to you to renew prior to the start of the next school year.
Enrollment Window: first week of each month only
Cost is prorated for policies purchased after September.

Students and Staff BYOD Directions

Avon Students and Staff may connect a personal device (BYOD=Bring Your Own Device) to the Avon Wi-Fi network. Click on a tab below for connection instructions according to your device type.

Windows PC

Avon Wi-Fi BYOD Instructions for Windows PC

Click the globe or Wi-Fi icon to display available networks.
Select Avon from the list of available Wi-Fi networks and click Connect.
Enter your student ID or staff username and network account password (same credentials you use to log on to a school computer). If you have never signed into a school computer (e.g., New Student), please sign into a school owned device before trying to connect.
When asked if you want to continue connecting, click Connect.
You should now be connected to the Avon network with 'Connected, Secured' below the name.

MAC Computer

Avon Wi-Fi BYOD Instructions for MAC

Click the Wi-Fi button on the top toolbar and click on the ‘Avon’ network to connect (You may have to click the ‘Other Networks’ dropdown to find it).
In the pop-up that asks for Account Name and Password, type in your student ID or staff username and network account password (same credentials you use to log on to a school computer).
Check the box to 'Remember this information.' Click 'OK.'
If a pop-up saying 'Verify Certificate' appears, click 'Continue.'
This will complete your device’s setup for the Avon network, and you will be able to browse the internet.

Android

AVON Wi-Fi BYOD Instructions for Android Devices

Select Avon from the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
Enter your Username (under ‘Identity’) and Password that you use to log into a school account.
Select the CA certificate and choose ‘Don’t validate.’ This step is required.
Once all information is complete, click Connect and you will have access to the internet.

iPhone

Avon Wi-Fi BYOD Instructions for iPhone

🛑 If your device was previously connected to the Avon network, be sure to ‘forget’ this network before following these new connection steps. Go to Settings >> General >> VPN & Device Management >> remove both profiles, then go back to Wi-Fi and forget the existing Avon network. 🛑

Select Avon from the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
Enter the Username and Password that you use to log into a school account.
Select Trust when asked about the ise-1 certificate. ISE-1 provides authentication services, allowing the network to be joined automatically next time.
This will complete your device’s setup for the Avon network, and you will be able to browse the internet.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Why MFA?

Attempts to access school employee accounts are rising. Securing your electronic accounts is a high priority. One more step to do this is called Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). Many of us have been using MFA for years with accounts like banking, retirement, or health. ACSC is taking the next step to secure our accounts too. MFA is not optional. It is required of us by our insurance carriers.

MFA asks you to verify any login with a second factor like a text or an app. This first step in our implementation plan will require the second factor only when you attempt to log in while offsite. On premises logins will not be affected. Also, you’ll not be asked for the second factor when you are offsite using an ACSC computer. On premises vs. off premises MFA requirements are subject to change as we work with our insurers.

MFA was turned on for all ACSC staff on February 28, 2022. If you didn’t register before then, you will not be able to log in until you complete the setup. Anyone who has not set this up will be prompted on screen to complete the setup before being allowed to log in from non-ACSC devices.

How to Register

Read this Learn to Register information.
Go to a place where you have a strong cellular signal (for some of us that’s at home or near a window)
Option 1: Download the Microsoft Authenticator App on your phone. (recommended)
Option 2: If you don’t use the Authenticator App you can opt to receive regular text messages.
Use your computer to click the 'Register here' link.
Follow the onscreen steps to register your device as the second factor to secure your login.

Tips

If you have your phone connected to ACSC email, it is recommended to use the Outlook App from your phone’s app store. The built-in iPhone email app (especially older versions) does not connect reliably over multifactor.
MFA is session based. You will not be asked to authenticate multiple times a day as long as your session remains active.
The Microsoft Authenticator App is recommended because it is more convenient than receiving a text message each time you login to your account from offsite.
It is recommended to register for a text message as backup method in case you are unable to use the Authenticator App.
