Technology

As you prepare for summer and the 2026-27 school year, please read the sections below that relate to your student(s) and their school-provided technology device.

• Laptops and chargers issued by the school are school property and must be returned upon withdrawal from school or when requested.

• Please remove stickers, ink, or other markings before returning devices. A clean-up fee may be charged if laptops are returned with these markings.

• Insurance to protect school-issued laptops is available and should be renewed yearly if purchased.

Students who will not attend Avon next year:

Laptops and chargers must be returned by the end of the last day of school at the technology support desk or the main office of your school. If your student’s enrollment status changes during the summer, these items can be returned at Door 5 of Avon Middle School South between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Laptops will be checked for damage, and if necessary, repair or replacement fees will be billed to parents/guardians. If the laptop and charger are not returned, we will follow our technology policy, which includes charging the parent/guardian for the device and charger.

Students currently in Grades 6 - 7 and 9 - 11:

Students will take laptops and chargers home this summer and must bring them back to school next year. These items are school property and must be kept in good condition or repair charges may apply.  

• Store the laptop in a room-temperature, dry location to avoid damage.  
• Charge the laptop every two weeks, even if it is not in use. When charging, place the laptop on a hard surface by itself to ensure proper airflow.  
• Fully shut down the laptop when not in use.  
• Laptops are assigned to specific students and are to be used only by the student to whom they are issued.  

If enrollment status changes and the student will no longer return to Avon Schools in the 2026-2027 school year, follow the instructions above to return the laptop and charger. If the laptop and charger are not returned at the start of the school year, we will follow our technology policy, which includes charging the parent/guardian for the device and charger. 

Students currently in Grade 8:

Laptops and chargers must be turned in before the end of the last day of school. Your school will provide specific instructions. All incoming 9th graders will receive an ACSC laptop at Avon High School’s Oriole Preview Day. Due to curricular and assessment requirements, students are not permitted to use personally owned devices at school. 

Graduating Seniors:

Seniors with a school-provided laptop must return their laptop and charger to the school before the end of the last day of school. Avon High School will provide specific instructions to seniors. Laptops will be checked for damage, and if necessary, repair or replacement fees will be billed to parents/guardians. If the laptop and charger are not returned, we will follow our technology policy, which includes charging the parent/guardian for the device and charger.

All students using a school-owned device must abide by the ACSC STEP-UP Student Device Guidelines and the Student Education Technology Acceptable Use and Safety policy (Board Policy po7540.03).

Laptops are provided for students in grades 6-8.

BYOD = Bring Your Own Device

For the 2025-2026 school year only, Avon High School students, in Grade 12 only, who do not wish to use a school laptop may choose to bring their own laptop for school use.  This will no longer be permitted beginning with the 2026-2027 school year. Windows laptops are preferred.  Chromebooks, tablets, and cell phones are NOT supported devices.

Windows PC minimum specifications:

• Windows 11
• Must have keyboard (no touch screen only devices) 
• 8 GB RAM
• 128 GB hard drive 
• Intel Celeron N4100 or faster processor
• Windows 10 S is not supported 

MAC minimum specifications:

• Apple Macbook Pro or Macbook Air running at least MacOS 11 (Big Sur) 
• Must have keyboard (no touch screen only devices)

Requirements:

• You must have admin rights to your computer in order to configure access to Avon's wireless network. 
• You may be required to install Respondus LockDown Browser for secure testing in Schoology. You will receive information from your teacher if this is required in your class.

What NOT to Bring:

• ACSC does not support Chromebooks. Each Chromebook is different and may have challenges connecting to our wireless network or accessing school learning resources.
• Please do not bring touch screen only phones or tablets such iPad, Kindle, Android tablets, or equivalent as your only device.  You must have a laptop with a keyboard to most effectively access learning resources.  

Avon Community Schools has chosen Worth Ave. Group as the vendor of choice to insure school-issued laptops. Insurance with Worth Ave. Group will protect the device against: Accidental Damage, Theft, Fire, Flood, Natural Disasters, Power Surge and Vandalism. This insurance policy will provide full replacement cost coverage and will protect the item worldwide (on and off school grounds).  The policy is also transferable to a replacement unit. Insurance plans may be purchased online.  Please note this insurance does not cover accidental loss of the laptop, and families will be charged the full replacement cost for a lost device.

• Coverage Term:  Date of purchase - July 18, 2026.
  • It is up to you to renew prior to the start of the next school year.
• Enrollment Deadline: The window to purchase coverage is open the first seven days of each month.
• Cost is prorated for policies purchased starting in November.

Purchase ACSC Device Insurance Online - Worth Ave. Group

Attempts to access school employee accounts are rising.  Securing your electronic accounts is a high priority.  One more step to do this is called Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).  Many of us have been using MFA for years with accounts like banking, retirement, or health.  ACSC is taking the next step to secure our accounts too.  MFA is not optional.  It is required of us by our insurance carriers. 

MFA asks you to verify any login with a second factor like a text or an app. This first step in our implementation plan will require the second factor only when you attempt to log in while offsite.  On premises logins will not be affected.  Also, you’ll not be asked for the second factor when you are offsite using an ACSC computer. On premises vs. off premises MFA requirements are subject to change as we work with our insurers. 

MFA was turned on for all ACSC staff on February 28, 2022.   If you didn’t register before then, you will not be able to log in until you complete the setup.  Anyone who has not set this up will be prompted on screen to complete the setup before being allowed to log in from non-ACSC devices.

3. Go to a place where you have a strong cellular signal (for some of us that’s at home or near a window)
4. Option 1: Download the Microsoft Authenticator App on your phone. (recommended) 
5. Option 2: If you don’t use the Authenticator App you can opt to receive regular text messages.
6. Use your computer to click the 'Register here' link.
7. Follow the onscreen steps to register your device as the second factor to secure your login. 

• If you have your phone connected to ACSC email, it is recommended to use the Outlook App from your phone’s app store. The built-in iPhone email app (especially older versions) does not connect reliably over multifactor.
• MFA is session based. You will not be asked to authenticate multiple times a day as long as your session remains active. 
• The Microsoft Authenticator App is recommended because it is more convenient than receiving a text message each time you login to your account from offsite. 
• It is recommended to register for a text message as backup method in case you are unable to use the Authenticator App.
• Contact the ACSC Technology Department for help.
