Letter to the Community from ACSC Board

An open letter to the Avon Community from the Avon Community School Corporation Board of Trustees:

The Avon Community School Corporation Board of Trustees met in executive session on Sunday, July 26 to review the corporation’s readiness to open on Wednesday, July 29. Hendricks County Health Officer Dr. David Stopperich joined the Board for a portion of the meeting.

The Board of Trustees remains committed to opening our schools on time. We reviewed the plans that have been developed by our administrators and teachers and believe these processes will create a safe environment for our children and staff.

We reviewed the latest Hendricks County data regarding COVID-19 and see that the number of positive cases in Hendricks County have remained consistently low (below 20 new cases per day) for the last two months.  Finally, we reviewed Governor Holcomb’s Executive Order 20-37 and we believe the procedures developed for Avon Schools will allow us to open doors on time and in compliance with that executive order.

During the meeting, Dr. Stopperich indicated, “While collaborating with the Indiana State Department of Health, we have learned much about this virus over the past several months and now we can make sound recommendations about safely opening schools. I am excited for the start of school on Wednesday and truly believe my kids, who attend Avon Schools, will be safe.”

We continue to receive feedback from our community, families, and staff both in support of returning to school and advocating for a delay. We are carefully reading every email received, and thank you for sharing your perspective. We are thankful to have such an engaged community whose first priority is the health and safety of our staff and children. We are grateful to our school leadership for their extra work getting us to this point and believe their months of preparation have us on track to successfully open schools.

We have complete confidence in our School Corporation leadership and staff to implement these plans and to do everything in their power to keep our children safe. We commit to you that we will continue to review the data and our operations regularly as the school year begins.

Sincerely,

ACSC Board of School Trustees
